Arbitrum urgently burns ETH to protect user funds after vulnerability discovered

18.04.2026
Arbitrum, a leading Ethereum-based Tier 2 platform, has announced an emergency burn of a significant amount of ETH following the discovery of a critical vulnerability in one of its smart contracts. The measure was taken to immediately prevent unauthorized access to user funds and minimize potential damage from a possible attack.
According to a statement from the Arbitrum team, the vulnerability allowed attackers to access transactional funds held on one of the system's key contracts. As a result, more than 3,000 ETH, equivalent to approximately $9.3 million at current exchange rates, was burned within hours of the threat being detected. The action was part of a comprehensive plan to protect the ecosystem and prevent further hacking attempts.
The developers noted that all burn operations were conducted transparently and under the supervision of independent auditors. Users of the platform were promptly notified of the incident and received regular updates on the progress of the issue. Currently, the Arbitrum team is finalizing the implementation of additional layers of protection and is working with cybersecurity experts to further analyze the situation.
Arbitrum's emergency response has received support from major market participants as well as the Ethereum community, underscoring the importance of responding quickly to security threats in the rapidly evolving decentralized finance sector.
